Federal Civil Rights & Discrimination Protections

America has a troubled history with civil rights protections and discrimination towards women, people of color, members of our LGBTQ+ community, religious minorities, and tribal populations. Not only have discriminatory practices put minority groups at a historical disadvantage, but the privileges afforded a white male (like myself) have given me a significant unequal advantage. All of our communities deserve access to the same schools, business/career opportunities, programs and more.

Protecting The Right to Vote for Everyone: As we celebrate the anniversary of the 19th Amendment we must remember despite playing crucial roles in securing women the right to vote, women of color were disenfranchised for decades - even now barriers remain for some to make their voices heard at the ballot box. I will push for federal policy that guarantees access to the ballot box, ends policies that disenfranchise women and men of color, and expand enforcement of the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act.

Passage of a 21st Century Equal Rights Amendment: In office, I will call for hearings on a new Equal Rights Amendment to extend civil rights protections to women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. This ERA will extend protections under the Constitution to those who face discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Confirming Federal Judges that Respect Civil & Reproductive Rights for All: In office, I will only vote to confirm federal judges that recognize that equal protection applies to all Americans, including members of the LGBTQ+ community. I will question judges on their fundamental respect and approach to reproductive rights, Roe v. Wade and respect for the privacy of a woman’s body.
